When an old Kalt asks Maran to be a “digger,” he upends Maran’s idea of her place in this world. Altyn Tag called Maran’s ability to visit gods “living in a new normal.” What did that mean? What duties did that demand? What responsibilities did that bring?
Even as Maran asks these questions of herself, a drug called Red Snake appears on the streets of Irontown, and Altyn fears that a Red Sybil may be in town. When rumors of another Astrean reaches Maran’s ears, she learns that Altyn has a hidden past connected with Red Snake, and Red Snake connects to the Red Lady, the Mistress of Secrets.
