I reviewed a number of different people refinishing furniture. Not as many as I would like, but enough. Most how-to's emphasize stripping and refinishing. I don't want to do that much. I want to preserve as much as possible. Fortunately, somebody did a minimal refinish of an old piece that more matched my goals. I want to spruce up the table, not completely redo it.
To that end, my plan is to clean it with mineral spirits, clean up any blemishes on the surface, then restain. Hopefully the new stain matches the old one well enough. That mismatch is the part that gets me the most nervous.
What I don't want to lose is the aged look of the remaining finish. I think that I would loses a great deal of the piece if I aimed for a full strip. The piece might look purdee, but it won't match Lori's apartment. That, and that's far more work than I have time for.
