This session ran well. They took out a General, who was the servant of Mephistopholes. They also fought a barbed devil, which really pushed them. We had some great, completely unexpected rolls that change the flow of combat. The players pulled off some clever use of spells. By the end of the night, they were out of healing and happy to have victory.
Nothing makes a good game like the credible prospect of death hinged against the necessity of victory.
All in all, I am fairly happy with this game. My ability to create encounters has greatly improved. I am get better at gearing challenges. My theories of game design, which got revamped over the last few years, have held up fairly well. The players respond well to a story oriented game, though too much detail is a killer. Mostly, I put alot of faith in my players to solve the challenges on their own.
