Yesterday was a "keep away from the auditorium" day as the Secret Service were getting reading for a presidential visit. I believe that he whisked in, talked about ebola, then whisked out. I don't know the details, and I certainly wasn't invited.
Back to normal today.
I'm back to the Wind Before The Storm. My lessons from the 70's are already coming in useful.
One of the themes that comes up in the 70's is the harp. That instrument sure did get lots of play. With McCaffrey, there are Harpers. In McKillip, there's a harper. And in other books, ones that I don't remember at the moment, harps and harpers play a role. So who am I to buck tradition?
Fitting in a harp seemed impossible, or impractical at first, until I gave the correct character a harp, and then it all got easy. Yenee is something of an internal healer, taking care of your insides far more than your outsides. Giving her a harp gave her hands something to do and felt ABSOLUTELY PERFECT, as if I had created her in order to be a harpist in the first place. Wowsers. So, when I talk about being influenced deeply by the 70's, this is a prime example. I had created a character that waited a whole draft to get the harp that she had been patiently waiting for.
I also learned that Astreans do not like harps. They constantly go out of tune. Thus, the curse of perfect pitch.
