Macbeth the Usurper

My mother is one of those people who always seems to have rules that no one else has. All my life, I grew up hearing about yet-another rule that I never heard of before. At this point in my life, I think my mother makes up rules just to have her way. She doesn't want to seem self-centered, so her preferences becomes everyone's preferences.

At some point in my 20's, I abandoned all of my mother's rules and I don't think that anyone noticed. Really, nobody else had these rules, or they were so totally out of fashion that nobody else had these rules. Once I threw the rules out, life got simpler.

Growing up, my mother never made much sense. If she talked about a delicate subject, she talked about it so delicately that I had no idea what she just said, or I wound up with such a bad idea of what she said that it was inapplicable. And I better say "yes" if she explained something, or I would get stuck having something explained the same way again and again until I said "yes, I understood."
